AVI/ALB Lab: IPAM Configuration

Intro

Welcome to Part 10 of the AVI/ALB Lab In the previous post, we configured the Management and VIP networks within Avi. In this post we’ll cover the creation of the Avi IPAM Profile.

What is IPAM?

IP Address Management (IPAM) is a method used to plan, track and manage information associated with a network’s Internet Protocol address space. Using IPAM software, administrators can make sure the repository of assignable IP addresses stays up-to-date. IPAM solutions help simplify and automate the administration of several tasks related to IP space management, including writing DNS records and configuring DHCP settings.

In this post I’ll be setting up the Avi Vantage IPAM which is built into the Avi product. Below is the list of IPAM solutions currently supported by Avi.

  • Avi Vantage IPAM
  • Avi Vantage DNS
  • AWS IPAM
  • GCP IPAM
  • Infoblox IPAM and DNS
  • OpenStack IPAM

The Avi IPAM configuration that I am going to use will allow us to automatically allocate IP addresses to the VIPs and Service Engines, you still have the option to configure these manually if you wish as long as they are outside of the range set on the IPAM profile.

Configuration

From the Avi UI navigate to Templates, Profiles, IPAM/DNS Profiles then click CREATE and select IPAM Profile

Enter a name, Select the Type of IPAM in this case Avi Vantage IPAM, click + Add Usable Network then select the NSX-T cloud from the dropdown finally select the Usable Network which in this case is the AVI-VIPs Network.
Click Save

Next we need to apply this profile to our cloud.
Navigate to Infrastructure, Clouds and click on the Pencil icon to edit the NSX-T cloud

Scroll to the bottom and select the IPAM profile from the dropdown list and click SAVE

Thats all we need to do now on to creating a basic Virtual Service!
